Three factors that influence the overall quality of the stereoscopic 3D content: image quality, comfort, and realism

چکیده
In today’s context, where 3D content is more abundant than ever and its acceptance by the public is probably definitive, there are many discussions on controlling and improving the 3D quality. But what does this notion represent precisely? How can it be formalized and standardized? How can it be correctly evaluated? A great number of studies have investigated these matters and many interesting approaches have been proposed. Despite this, no universal 3D quality model has been accepted so far that would allow a uniform across studies assessment of the overall quality of 3D content, as it is perceived by the human observers. In this paper, we are making a step forward in the development of a 3D quality model, by presenting the results of an exploratory study in which we started from the premise that the overall 3D perceived quality is a multidimensional concept that can be explained by the physical characteristics of the 3D content. We investigated the spontaneous impressions of the participants while watching varied 3D content, we analyzed the key notions that appeared in their discourse and identified correlations between their judgments and the characteristics of our database. The test proved to be rich in results. Among its conclusions, we consider of highest importance the fact that we could thus determine three different perceptual attributes – image quality, comfort and realism – that could constitute a first simplistic model for assessing the perceived 3D quality.

Quality of experience model for 3DTV
Modern stereoscopic 3DTV brings new QoE (quality of experience) to viewers, which not only enhances the 3D sensation due to the added binocular depth, but may also induce new problems such as visual discomfort. Subjective quality assessment is the conventional method to assess the QoE. However, the conventional perceived image quality concept is not enough to reveal the advantages and the drawb...
متن کاملStereo/multiview picture quality: Overview and recent advances
Stereoscopic 3D content brings with it a variety of complex technological and perceptual issues. For the percept of depth to be convincing, consistent, and comfortable, a large number of parameters throughout the imaging and processing pipeline need to be matched correctly. In practice, tradeoffs are inevitable, which may then affect the quality or comfort of the 3D viewing experience. This pap...
متن کاملExploration of Quality of Experience of Stereoscopic Images: Binocular Depth
Compared to traditional 2D image techniques, stereoscopic techniques provide additional information the binocular depth, which strongly enhances the immersion. However, it may also cause visual comfort problems because it is still not a perfect representation of natural human vision but to some extent an illusion. How to fairly evaluate and understand the QoE (Quality of Experience) of stereosc...
متن کامل3D Visual Comfort Assessment via Sparse Coding
The issue of visual discomfort has long been restricting the develop‐ ment of advanced stereoscopic 3D video technology. Bolstered by the require‐ ment of highly comfortable three-dimensional (3D) content service, predicting the degree of visual comfort automatically with high accuracy has become a topic of intense study. This paper presents a novel visual comfort assessment (VCA) metric based ...
متن کاملSurvey of perceptual quality issues in three-dimensional television systems
Three-dimensional television (3DTV) is often mentioned as a logical next step following high-definition television (HDTV). A high quality 3-D broadcast service is becoming increasingly feasible based on various recent technological developments combined with an enhanced understanding of 3-D perception and human factors issues surrounding 3DTV. In this paper, perceptually relevant issues, in par...
